Are you planning to get new furniture units for your kitchen, or plan to keep the old ones? Either way, you have to ensure that their presence is safe for you and for the people in your home especially the children. Even the mere replacement of kitchen cupboard doors should have safety precautions.
Accidents often occur because owners do not really know the basic things that they should consider when getting new or keeping old kitchen furniture units. To make sure that you are doing the right thing, consider the following things:
1. Rubber protectors
If your furniture unit has sharp angles, consider using rubber protectors. They are those which you see in hardware shops and other home and decorating stores in Lshape and made of rubber. They are to be attached on the corners of the furniture so anyone that could bump into it would not get hurt.
When your furniture units are next to delicate structures, for example, wooden floors, rubber protectors can also be used. There are those which are made just to stick on your furniture so that the whole structure of the units would not collide with the structure next to it.
2. Locks
Locks are very helpful when you want to keep your kitchen goods secure. However, we often miss them. There are locks which are very easy to break into. There are also locks with very weak keys, and they tend to break if we do not use them
carefully.
Consider strong and durable locks for your kitchen. These are not necessarily to protect your goods for burglars because they are not that attractive to them, but from kids who would try to use tools just to open them.
3. Fasteners
Whether you are located near a fault line or in a very peaceful community, furniture fasteners are needed to make sure that your furniture units, such as tall and hanging cabinets do not fall onto someone. Falling may be resulted by earthquake, a simple movement of things in the area, or when even a small force is exerted to make it happen.
Kids surely are very attracted to tall cabinets since they can climb onto those. Your furniture should be attached strongly to the wall when it happens. These fasteners are available in hardware stores and should be strongly installed on the wall. Thus, you may need a professional to help you with it.

How to Make Accents to Your Kitchen
You may feel like your kitchen has already gone boring. Well, there are things that you can do such as repairing broken kitchen cabinet doors, repainting walls, and also add some accents. They all have different ways to make your kitchen look better.
You do not need to get an interior designer all the time when you make some accents to your kitchen. Most of the materials can actually come from your own kitchen, or even the garage. The following are some of the things that can enhance your kitchen’s appearance:
1. Hemp ball
You have been probably charmed by hemp balls at home decorating shops and even at fancy restaurants. However, they are a little bit expensive and may not be include in your budget since it is basically not a need. But you can actually also have your own by making some.
Making a DIY hemp ball is very easy. All you have to do is find an inflatable ball; it works better than balloons since it can get a perfect shape. Wrap the hemp wire around the ball and make sure they stick to the surface using glue.
Continue doing it until you reach your desired thickness. Make sure that you leave a circular space on top of the ball; this is where you attach the bulb or holder. Let it dry for at least 48 hours. Deflate the ball and you are good to go.
2. Framed old silverware
If there are some silverware that have been passed on to you by your parents or grandparents, which you think are not that useful anymore, you can use them as accents to your kitchen instead. This is especially good if you do not have any intention on using them, or if some items are missing making it impossible to use them.
Put them on a frame, preferably one that fits the design their design. You can put it near your preparation area, or if you have a show cabinet, next to it.
3. Vegetable gourmet basket
Another great way to put some accents to your kitchen is making a vegetable gourmet basket. You can use just any basket, but wicker could be very appealing. Use all the vegetable that you think you would use throughout the week. Just be sure that there aren't rodents in the kitchen.
This vegetable gourmet basket would eliminate the use of impractical plastic fruit and vegetable decorations that supposedly demonstrating bounty, but because they aren't real, it gives negative impression.

How Much Can Kitchen Cabinet Doors Change?
Though it looks like a small thing when compared to the totality, kitchen cabinet doors contribute to the total change of the kitchen façade. As a matter of fact, there were documented testimonials from past-users who saw how advantageous they can get both in terms of their kitchen experience and workability. You can also avail of them if you embrace the changes as well.
You might find it hard to believe that such is the case. Rather than quantifying these things, you can try observing if the following conditions are met within your kitchen to know if there really was a drastic change:
1. Safety within the vicinity
Kids are really curious and they want to get hold of things that they often see you use. When they go to your kitchen they would be able to see a lot of items that may pose danger to the, such as knives, cleaning solutions, and many more. Surely you do not want kids to be put at risk so you better have reliable storage unit.
You can say that one storage unit such as cabinets is reliable when there are functioning doors and locks. You see cabinet doors are really important as those would keep things that should not be within the reach of children for safely.
2. Food preservation and consumption
Food items are usually kept in cupboards, particularly those that are canned, or dry in nature like pasta. Cupboards are expected to help preserve the availability and quality of these food items. As well as control the ins and outs.
But if cupboards do not have working doors, it would be easy for insects and rodents to go to your food items which might lead to undesirable results. Working doors for cupboards are a great way to make sure that your food supply is well-guarded.
3. Overall kitchen appeal
When you look at a kitchen with broken cabinet doors, an impression that the homeowner is not keeping his home well-maintained, and he does not care at all with his health, given that the kitchen is where food preparation is done, can be readily made.
Do not mislead people with an impression which you are not just because your cupboard doors are dysfunctional. The overall kitchen appeal would highly improve if you have your storage units equipped with good and working doors. Their hinges should not be rusted and their locks can be easily managed.

Remembering Our Very First Kitchen in the Early Eighties
Throughout the last few decades kitchen designs have
certainly evolved, and in doing so, the kitchen has truly become the ‘hub of
the home’. Stylish kitchen designs, natural materials and use of colour
provides charm, warmth and cosy settings, where many activities and social
functions now take place. However, growing up in the early eighties I remember
our family kitchen being a very different place.
Back then, we lived in a modest three bedroom semi-detached
town house where our basic kitchen consisted of a stand-alone gas cooker, a
medium sized fridge-freezer combined, a sink and four storage cupboards. As
cupboards go, these provided the main storage for foodstuff, baking utensils,
cutlery, crockery and the many pots and pans my mother had accumulated over the
years. Made of formica and covered in thin layers of brown wood like laminate,
these cupboard doors, drawer fronts and tops were unattractive and not at all
sturdy. The floor was garish green tiles.
Some years later as the family grew, we invested in a tall
cupboard, which we called ‘the larder. This came in a light blue shade and had
three compartments. The top compartment had frosted glass panels, and it was
here we displayed our crockery. In the middle and bottom section tins of food,
rice and packets of dry legumes were stored. I remember being fascinated by the
door on the middle section, which locked automatically in place when shut and
opened downwards on hinges, providing a little more work space on which to
prepare a bowl of cereal in the morning or a sandwich after school. Looking
back now, the kitchen was totally mismatched, but it didn’t seem to matter much
then, mum was always able to prepare and cook tasty wholesome meals for us to
share.
Today, kitchen renovations and remodelling are the
most popular home improvement of all time. These new kitchen designs take into
account the layout of the room, many of which have been made bigger by knocking
two rooms into one, in order to accommodate all the activities that now takes
place in this room. They also aim to achieve the ideal look and feel that’s
right for the home by providing sufficient storage space helping to keep the
worktops clear and the kitchen neat. The quality, styles and designs of today’s
kitchen cupboard doors and drawer fronts bring a completely different
look and feel to the kitchen and home, one that is chic and stylish.
Where once paint and plain white tiles were the main
features on the walls, many designs now incorporating glass, metal, decorative
tiles, natural stone, solid wood, and other hard wearing materials. The kitchen
is therefore able to withstand the constant thoroughfare of family and
visitors. The addition of great lighting and attractive seating areas put the
finishing touches to the perfect place to relax and dine.
Gone are those days of having a basic,
mismatched kitchen. With kitchens designers and manufacturers working hard to
meet the needs, taste and preference of the modern day family, rest assured,
there is a kitchen design out there to suit your home and lifestyle today.

Making Your Kitchen Fresh in 4 Ways
Have
you ever wondered why some kitchens smell fresh, and some are not? Freshness is
not just for new kitchens. Even if
your kitchen is not new anymore, you can still keep its hygienic smell and atmosphere.
To make your kitchen
fresher, put a slice of lemon at the bottom of your garbage can before throwing
in your trash. You can also place some slices in a bowl near the sink so you
can use them on your hands after preparing meat and fish. This prevents your hand
and the area from getting stinky.
Below
are some of the things that you should keep in mind to keep your kitchen fresh:
1.
Away
with bad air
One
way to keep good air stay in the kitchen is to have open windows big enough to
let bad air out. If you are not that comfortable with big windows, why not install
an exhaust fan? Connect the fan with a switch so you can just easily press the
button whenever you want to use it.
Another
benefit from having open windows or an exhaust fan is to neutralise the
temperature in the kitchen. Summer afternoon lunch cooking would then be not
that bad.
2.
Throw
the garbage everyday
The
main sources of bad smell are garbage and decaying food items. Throwing your
garbage everyday as much as possible is the ultimate solution that you can do.
But
if you are very busy doing it, throw your garbage at least 3 times a week.
While they are still sitting in your kitchen, make sure your can has a cover.
3.
Clean
your stove
It
looks nasty if you see some oils in your kitchen, especially on spots where you
often use just like your stove. It is inevitable that your stove gets oily
especially that you are cooking there every day. You can also see some spillages
and food bits which would attract flies and rodents.
After
washing the dishes, do not forget to wipe your stove and put some disinfectant
on it. If you don’t do this, unwanted substances would build up and even stick
to your stove which would make it a little hard to remove. If your stove is not
made of stainless material, expect that rust would also build up.
4.
Lemons.
Lemons!
The
smell of lemons just brings freshness. This is the reason why it is favourite
scent for laundry and dish soaps, and even in car fresheners! When we want to
vomit, the smell of lemons also saves us.

4 Things You Should Be Concerned About in Your Kitchen
There
are just so many things that we attend to daily. At the start of the day, the
first thing we do is prepare meals for the family. This sounds more of a
routine, but there is more than that. Some homeowners may even plan to have new kitchens to make such routine
easier.
Whether
your kitchen is new or not, still you need to maintain it. And maintenance is
not just cleaning. It is also checking regularly if everything is doing fine. The
following are the things that you should be concerned about in your kitchen:
1.
Safety
Are
your hanging racks and cabinets properly attached to the wall? Do you think
they can hold heavy items that you store in them? If their contents fall, would
those harm the person who gets hit by them? These questions are all leading to
taking safety measures in your kitchen.
It
is always better if you have taken enough precautions by seeing if the hinges
of your kitchen door are still intact, or if there is any sharp edges on your
island, than to be sorry once an accident happens.
2.
Expiration
dates
The
next thing we have to be concerned about is expiration date. Always check
whether your food items are still safe to eat. If you eat them beyond their expiration,
there is a big possibility that you would poison yourself.
One
thing you can do to make your tracking easier is to buy food items which
expiration date would still be after 3 months or more. Most likely you were
already able to eat them by that time.
3.
Water
supply
Water
is one of our basic needs for living. It is also a need to maintain
cleanliness. To make sure you have a smooth preparation in your kitchen,
especially during rush hour, having a good supply of water is important.
If
you think you are not getting enough, your pipe could be clogged or leaking
somewhere. Look for a plumber to check it for you.
4.
Broken
appliances
Make
food preparation easier and quicker with working appliances. If you fail to use
your kitchen appliances properly, you are increasing the risk of breaking them.
One example would be spilling some water on your microwave oven, which could
lead to breaking circuits.

4 Indicators That You Need a New Kitchen
Change
is part of our daily life and it is inevitable; just like getting new kitchens. Part of making change
possible is spending which also becomes a stumbling block for our desire to
make our kitchen space more comfortable. With too many upcoming and unexpected
expenses, when can we really say that we are ready to upgrade our kitchen?
Prevention
is always better than cure. We can’t afford to wait for something to happen in
order for us to make a move. We should always be prepared to face this
inevitable situation so that we always have the upper hand.
Indicators
that you are ready to renovate your kitchen into something new are:
Your
kitchen is probably the place which has the most safety risks. This is because
that is where your gas plumbing culminates, your stove creates fire when
cooking, and sharp knives are used and kept there. Can you imagine what would
happen if you can’t move around your kitchen easily?
You
might end up hurting yourself and others due to improper distribution of space.
You can only make this better if you reposition your furniture and appliances.
Meals
are expected to be prepared quickly especially when your family members have to
go to school and work. It will be difficult to do so if your appliances are performing
less effective than what it used to be.
You
can solve this issue with the upgrade since it includes electronics aside from
the structural changes that you want to do for your kitchen.
Do
you already see small holes on your cabinet doors? Have you seen some animal
discharge lately? If yes, pests are increasing in your kitchen. This would make
it unsafe for you and your family.
Shooing
them away can’t be done instantly especially if they have already established
themselves in your kitchen. But with an upgrade you can cover up those holes at
the same time make sure that no possible entry can be made again for those
creatures.
When
power consumption is increasing, we normally think that it is due to the
increase in number of electric appliances. But it is not always the case. It
could be that your appliances are depreciating and consuming more power
compared to its performance.

5 Tips in Buying and Planning Your Kitchen
![]() |
| source: echoleigh via flickr |
Having
functional and comfortable kitchens would indeed make your everyday life easier
especially if you are the one who is preparing food for your family. Getting
things done in an appropriate manner and justifiable duration of time would
even make it better.
If
you are getting a new kitchen or upgrading your old one, here are some tips
that might help you during the buying and planning
process:
1.
Know
what you need
When
upgrading your kitchen, it is inevitable to buy new appliances. Dishwasher, electric
cooker, oven, and refrigerators are just few of the appliances which a functional
kitchen should have. Check if your appliances are still working fine and
replace them if not.
Do
not forget to include the number of sockets in your kitchen. You might find it hard
preparing meals if your sockets are not enough to accommodate the appliances
you need to use.
2.
Don’t
spend too much
We
have a tendency to believe that when something is expensive, it is beautiful.
But actually it is not. Most of the time, a kitchen unit becomes expensive because
its manufacturer is already established.
It
doesn't also mean that once a unit is second hand, it will eventually break
down. If you have decided to check some second hand shops, you will find items
which are still in good condition.
3.
Bargain
and compare
Do
not be shy in bargaining especially if you know that the shop is entertaining
such. You can ask your friends whether
they were able to bargain at a certain shop and do the same.
To
save some amount, it also would not hurt if you compare shops, their prices,
and the quality of their products. It may take so much time to do so, but with
the aid of the internet, it will become more convenient.
4.
Get
a detailed schedule
After
purchasing a kitchen unit, you may be offered an installation from the shop. If
this is the case, verify if it is going to be free or not. When you agree with
the installation, do not pay more than 25% of the upfront payment to avoid
being busted.
You
also have to get a detailed schedule of the items that they are going to
install on that day so you can track if everything you need is going to be
done.
5.
Think
of alternatives
Always
ask the installers how long the whole process would last so you would know the
workarounds that you are going to do in cooking. Think of alternatives if the
kitchen will not be available yet for your kitchen routine.

exact fit.

and farmhouse kitchens. Whichever style you choose your kitchen is guaranteed

on the look throughout the kitchen by updating the worktops using materials and
colours that work well with the new cabinet doors and decor within the room.

mood and ambiance during cooking and entertaining.

appliances, especially if they have been well looked after and in good working
order. Many homebuyers are usually happy to accept the kitchen as it is with
all the necessary appliances already in place.
